WEST SYNDROME

Mandatory seizures

Epileptic spasms are a mandatory seizure type, these usually occur in a series on awakening but may also occur in sleep. If spasms are asynchronous, asymmetric or unilateral this suggests seizure onset in a focal region of the brain.

Focal seizures may occur, these may lead into a series of spasms, or may occur at the end of a series of spasms.
