GENETIC EPILEPSY WITH FEBRILE SEIZURES PLUS (GEFS+) SPECTRUM

Mandatory seizures

Febrile seizures, these are typically generalized tonic-clonic seizures lasting 3-6 minutes although tonic, hemiclonic or focal motor seizures are seen infrequently. Febrile status epilepticus may occur.

CAUTION If febrile seizures are prolonged or hemiclonic consider Dravet syndrome.

May have

• Atonic seizures
• Myoclonic seizures
• Typical absence seizures (when present these are infrequent)
• Myoclonic-atonic seizures (seen in 14%, if these are a major seizure type without prominent febrile seizures, then a diagnosis of epilepsy with myoclonic atonic seizures may be more appropriate)
• Focal seizures
