UNKNOWN ETIOLOGY

'Unknown' is meant to be viewed neutrally and to designate that the nature of the underlying cause of the epilepsy is as yet unknown; it may have a fundamental genetic defect at its core or there may be a separate as yet unrecognized disorder. Examples of epilepsies where the etiology may be considered as yet unknown are presented in this section of EpilepsyDiagnosis.org.
